Community Initiatives

About Community Initiatives

Community Initiatives are community programs and/or public events   that serve to connect people, strengthen communities and celebrate our   shared humanity. These programs are driven by the combined energies of   the Sharon Pluralism Network (SPN) and SPN affiliated partner   organizations, Interfaith Action Youth Leadership Program participants   and community volunteers. We work together to find volunteers to   energize and execute new program ideas and support efforts to secure   funding in support of new programming. We welcome new opportunities and   are open to your ideas to support and expand the vision of a joyful,  shared, civil, peaceful, coexistence.

Fifth Annual Rev. Robert W. Bullock Memorial Lecture

The Fifth Annual Rev. Robert W. Bullock Memorial Lecture will take place on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 7:30 pm in Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Our guest lecturer this year is Dr. John Kaltner, The Virginia Ballou McGehee Professor of Muslim-Christian Relations at Rhodes College in Memphis TN. The title of Dr. Kaltner’s lecture is “Mary, Mother of Christians and Muslims”.

In 2005, the Parish Pastoral Council of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish established the Rev. Robert W. Bullock Lecture in memory of its beloved former pastor. This annual lecture is delivered in the spring of each year by a distinguished scholar or religious leader. This event honors the memory of Father Bullock and provides an ongoing forum in which the people of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and of the Sharon community can be in dialogue with speakers who share Father Bullock’s ideals and aspirations.

The goals of the Lecture are

* Discuss an important topic relevant to the Catholic Church in our times, in the spirit of Vatican II and consistent with Father Bullock’s life-long commitment to the Church, religious education and interfaith communication.
* Foster a spirit of ecumenism, inclusion and solidarity among the people of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and the Sharon community.
* Facilitate a dialogue with people of Catholic and other faith traditions.

Please contact Fr. Scott (781-784-2265) for additional information.

Book Reading and Signing - “Street Shadows:A Memoir of Race, Rebellion, and Redemption” by Professor Jerald Walker

Date & time: Thursday, May 6 - 7:00 p.m.
Community Center Ballroom (1st floor)
Free program - RSVP for seating preferred

Professor Jerald Walker reads from and signs his new memoir, “Street Shadows: A Memoir of Race, Rebellion, and Redemption.” In this moving and masterfully told story, Walker reveals his own struggles growing up in Chicago housing projects as a boy of great promise, his descent into the “thug life” and the wakeup call that led to him finding himself again. It is an eloquent account of how the past shadows but need not determine the future.

Dr. Walker is an associate professor of English at Bridgewater State College. He attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop where he was a teaching/writing fellow and a James A. Michener Fellow. “We are Americans,” which is a chapter excerpt from this book, was chosen for Best African American Essays: 2009. Two other chapters were chosen for Best American Essays 2007 & 2009. His work has also appeared in numerous publications including Mother Jones and the anthology Brothers: 26 Stories of Love and Rivalry.

Copies of Dr. Walker’s book will be available for purchase and signing.
