Celebrate the wonderful diversity of Sharon with the Sharon’s Many Traditions Photo Exhibit. Don’t miss the closing celebration this Thursday October 29 from 7-9 PM. YLP teens will lead optional small group discussions on traditions and a buffet dessert table will also sweeten the evening.

Over eighty photographs have been collected to show the many ways religious, cultural and family traditions are celebrated in town. The photographers are professional and amateurs from the community. The photo exhibit  provides an excellent opportunity to see how some of our neighbors celebrate their holidays and other important occasions. Each photo includes a description to help people learn the traditions of the photographer. There are photos from many different religious and cultural groups in town.

The variety of submissions from the community illustrates how definitions of traditions can vary and often are shaped by the participants, who come together to share beliefs, values, history, and camaraderie.  In addition to religious and cultural traditions, people contributed photographs of family traditions, community events, and social action projects.

One of the contributors who submitted her Kentucky Derby tradition photo is Sharon resident, Andrea Astrachan. Every year, her friends gather to watch the race.  According to Ms. Astrachan, “Celebrating the ‘Run for the Roses’ provides an opportunity to welcome the spring season.  Equally important to the race itself are: spring attire, which ranges from outlandish hats to seersucker suits; traditional fare from the bluegrass state, including Derby pie; and of course, mint juleps!”

Perhaps you read about the exhibit in the September 24 Globe South. Come now and enjoy it for yourself! There is a “Viewers Choice” program in conjunction with the exhibit, so please cast your vote for your favorites. The Viewer’s Choice Recipients will be acknowledged at the exhibit closing ceremony on October 29 from 7-9 PM. Weekday Exhibit hours: September 24 - October 29, 2009, M -Th, 9-4 and F, 9-12.  219 Massapoag Avenue (at Dubinsky Drive), Sharon, MA.  Lakeside Gallery:  781-784-8000.

The Sharon Photo Exhibit is sponsored by the Sharon Pluralism Network, including the Adult Center, the Recreation Department, and Interfaith Action Inc. It is supported by the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, the Sharon Cultural Council, and an anonymous private donor.
